Donda West passed away on November 10, 2007. In ESSENCE's May 2006 issue Kanye wrote a letter to his mother expressing his love:
Dear Mama,
A lot of times people in my position are so busy that they don't take time to really chill, but you and I see each other all the time. We go to the movies, we go out to eat. We're just mad cool.I know there are many things I could say to you right now, but there's no way any of it would be the same as what I wrote to you in "Hey Mama." I wrote that song back in 2000. It took me a month to finish, and at the time it was the absolute best song I had. I even used it to shop my demo. Everything is in that song—how much I care about you and how you've always been there for me.
